Global warming is not a myth. Scientists have proven it is not a myth. Measurements in ice temperatures at the polar caps have confirmed a progressive warming that can be attributed, at least in part, to greenhouse gas emissions. Compared to oil and coal profiteers, there is a relatively small cross-section of alternative energy providers that would stand to gain from reallocation of our energy production, which should happen no matter what. People seem to forget that we are part of an ecosystem. We are not self-sufficient. If we pervert and destroy that which sustains us, it will spell the end for us. Probably not in our lifetime, but later on down the road. And for the record, people have lost their hair (and worse) as a result of eating fish contaminated with mercury and other pollutants. I wonder what could have been pouring that shit into our waterways. My bet is on humans. posted by: Lorischuster (reply) post date: 03.13.07 (3:37 pm) Reply to: evilmammoth Time will tell which was the greater threat. Lori, Love the contrast in styles. Had to at least check in once or twice and see if you posted. Later. posted by: evilmammoth (reply) post date: 03.14.07 (9:12 am) Reply to: ottomanprang Same crew of gutless powerhogs that whipped us up into a frenzy after 9/11. They tell us that leaving Iraq would plunge the world into chaos. Thankfully, the country is tiring of this crew of good, old boys.. posted by: surrogate (reply) post date: 03.16.07 (5:38 pm) Yeah I know what you mean... sometime those scientific threats are just foolish as can be... of course sometimes they're not. Why just two years ago I started hearing about something called the emerald ash borer. A strange little insect that would supposedly attack thousands of ash trees in Michigan and surrounding states. The morons. To date we've only lost about 20 million. Same thing when I was a kid about some stupidly predicted thing called Dutch Elm disease. Then there's aids. That's not nearly as serious as predicted, in fact, it probably doesn't even exist, does it? For every scare that hasn't come to pass, there's one that has. To call global warming a hoax because we still haven't overpopulated the earth makes no sense. Besides overpopulation has little to do with not having enough physical space on which to plant our butts. It means having too many people in a small area without the means to support those living within that space, and there are plenty of pockets of that already all over the world. But, you're right really, in that if we had the will to do something about it, we could, so to call it overpopulation could be a misnomer, though splitting hairs doesn't mean much to a starving child. posted by: lstrock (reply) post date: 03.17.07 (11:15 am) I don't think she is saying that these things do not exist on a smaller scale, but the way they are reported leads you to believe that we are all going to die from it. And the emerald ash borer come on! Yes all these things have happen on some level in some area of the world. But if you listen to the main stream media we should have all been dead by now. She is not saying that these things are not going to happen but not in the scale the media would have you believe. And if you call the emerald ash borer a scare that has come to pass I guess you would be right. Thousands of trees cut down in the prime of their lives. posted by: LoriSchuster (reply) post date: 03.17.07 (3:01 pm) Reply to: surrogate Ah yes...the starving children... now there's a new and articulate argument. Dutch Elm disease??? Good grief listen to yourself. posted by: surrogate (reply) post date: 03.17.07 (3:51 pm) Reply to: The fact that children starve in overpopulated areas isn't an articulate argument as proof such areas exist, or you see using starving children as an example of such problems as sloppy and yucky? Too depressing to think about? Probably just a liberal hoax... Dutch elm desease is laughable too... interesting. Know what's occured as a result of it? You do like to make fun of things you go out of your way to know nothing about... "I don't know anything about it, so it's not true." Brilliant. You of all people ought to know better. Oh yeah, Reagan, the guy who didn't want to do shit about aids, is your hero. I forgot. The logic seems to be that if something hasn't occurred on a huge scale yet, it isn't on it's way to happening... Um, gee, let's see, overpopulation warnings started less than fifty years ago during which time the worlds population has tripled. In another fifty, what whould you guess the population will be? Think there MIGHT be some problems associated with such growth? Oh, I know, it doesn't matter to YOU cuz by then Jesus will have come back and taken all you folks away so you don't have to worry about the rest of us heathens. Wasn't that logical extension of your diatribe of a couple of weeks ago? Who's snotty? posted by: lorischuster (reply) post date: 03.17.07 (5:13 pm) Reply to: surrogate Here is where we are different. I may often disagree with your logic and your ideology, but, I never question your integrity, your motives, your heart or how you came to come to the conclusions you have in life. You on the other hand, are quite at ease with attacking my motives, my heart, my ability to be empathetic, my faith, my intelligence, and my compassion. Do you really believe I don't care about people? Really? How arrogant that because I dare disagree with you, I am somehow less compassionate to those who are suffering. You know absolutely nothing about me. I am done with this...life is just too short. posted by: lstrock (reply) post date: 03.17.07 (5:48 pm) Lori I cant believe you cant see the risk from dutch elm desease! Elm trees are the most popular shade tree, if they die off then we have no shade and thus die from skin cancer. posted by: surrogate (reply) post date: 03.17.07 (7:29 pm) Reply to: lorischuster you belittle and don't consider it attacking... I learned long time ago, when belittled attack BACK. posted by: surrogate (reply) post date: 03.18.07 (10:37 am) "There is power in causing someone to be fearful. It puts people at the mercy of someone who has the apparent power to prevent this terrible thing from happening. It is how for hundreds of years people in power have lorded it over others. The church kept people under control using the fear of eternal damnation while communism utilized the fear of retribution and death." -Kind of like how at first, the idea of NOT attacking, and now, how leaving Iraq, is portrayed by our current leaders. posted by: Alex (reply) post date: 04.25.07 (6:04 am) Thank You |
